Description
The Dwarf Hairy Penstemon (Penstemon
hirsutus) is an extremely easy variety of Penstemon
to grow. They grow in zones
3 to 9, and only to elevations of about 10000 feet.
It is a low growing shrub, or subshrub,
that only grows to a height of 4 to 6 inches. One individual
plant will spread out to take over an area of about
12 inches in diameter.
To properly grow, the Dwarf Hairy Penstemon
requires full sunlight, but has no special water conditions,
and tolerates most soil types and conditions. This plant
flowers in late spring, normally late
June or early July, and produces tubular lavender colored
flowers in a raceme inflorescence.
When deciding to plant Dwarf Hairy Penstemon
in your garden, wait until the danger of the springs
frost has passed, and sow directly into the ground.
You can also get small, pre-grown plants
for transplant. Whether using seed or small plants,
space either 8 to 14 inches apart for maximum coverage.
